The Return of Mocking Bird

Mon May 7, 2007, 2:35 PM
Oh. Wow. I just returned to DA after almost an entire school year of absence last weekend and ended up sorting through literally hundreds of submissions. I don't have the time or energy to comment on all the myriad submissions I greatly enjoyed, so I'll just say, "Good job on the arts, you guys, good job." [insert applause here]

[ General Life Status ]

I'm very, very close to being done with my freshman years of college. I haven't been on DA because I've been working for my classes. This entire year. No, really. Are you familiar with the Princeton Review's "Their Students Never Stop Studying" list? My school is always in the top ten.

I'm currently in a soothing lull between exams, and will begin my summer next week. My summer will basically consist of minimum-wage monkey work (yay for money) and messing about on the interwebs because I'll be in a middle of nowhere tourist town and desperate to retain some semblance of human contact.

T'was a good year. I met a lot of people who share my esoteric interests, learned how to take the bus, and developed the ability to write 10 pages of literary analysis per hour. I also spent a ridiculous amount oftime in my school's extensive student-run comic book library. That's right, a wonderful, wonderful place where I could read all the comics I could ever want to read without actually have to scrounge to together the money to buy the new issues and trade paperbacks.

I read a lot of old Warren Ellis, Grant Morrison, Alan Moore, and a lot of "artsier" graphic novels I'd been wanting to read. I also read the now-completed series of Sandman, Transmetropolitan, and other lovely classics. The ability to actually follow ongoing series was pretty awesome. Ones I particularly liked included B.P.R.D. / Hellboy (though I'd already been reading that), The Goon, Fellm Invincible, Powers, Runaways, and The Walking Dead. I case you can't tell from that list, I loves me some superheroes and occult phenomena.

So, actually, I spent my year studying and reading comics. And engaging in pseudo-philosophical discussions in the wee hours of the morning. Anyway.

The Changeling is, at least for now, on a hiatus of undetermined length. I apologize, but I've lost interest in it for the time being. This is why I really shouldn't post longer pieces until I finish them.

I also got a drawing tablet and I'm a little in love with it.

I'm going to post a couple of visual submissions that have been sitting on my hard drive that I rather like. Upcoming writerly submissions, most likely starting to appear next week, will include...

[ Things To Come ]

Abominable: A 5-part B.R.P.D. Fanarc *complete*

Bookgirl and the Mystery of the Dead Gods: A Hallucinatory Short Story *almost done*

Dr. Nobody: A Cold War Era Paranoid Fairy Tale *halfway done*

  • Listening to: "Levitate Me" - Pixies
  • Reading: Life: The Science of Biology :(
  • Drinking: anything caffeinated

Mind if I watch? It's a great story so far.
